Yamanashi Prefecture, home to Japan’s tallest mountain—Mount Fuji,
is the top producer of grapes, peaches, and plums in Japan.
Thanks to its basin geography, the region cultivates a wide variety of fruits,
earning Yamanashi the reputation as the “Fruit Kingdom.”
With long hours of sunlight, short nights, large temperature differences between day and night,
and relatively low rainfall, the region’s unique natural environment and climate allow the fruits to grow exceptionally sweet and flavorful.
Grape cultivation in Yamanashi dates back to ancient times, introduced via the Silk Road,
and the area boasts a long history of advanced cultivation techniques.
Shine Muscat grapes undergo “flower thinning” at the flowering stage, followed by “fruit thinning.”
These agricultural techniques involve removing part of the flower clusters and fruits to keep only a small portion. This allows the tree to concentrate nutrients on fewer grapes and prevents the fruits from pressing against each other during growth, which can cause damage to the flesh.
